After warnings this week that retail copies had been stolen from a pressing plant, a leak of Call of Duty: Black Ops, the follow up to last year’s mind-bogglingly successful Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, seemed inevitable. Riding on the back of the hundreds of thousands of letters sent out by lawyers to alleged file-sharers demanding settlement for copyright infringement, scammers now want their piece of the pie. Using emails which appear to come from a known copyright holder represented by legitimate lawyers, recipients are getting a familiar message. Pay us a relatively small amount now, the emails say, or things could get a whole lot worse.

It is almost four years ago that The Pirate Bay announced they wanted to buy the micronation of Sealand, so they could host their site without having to bother about copyright law – an ambitious plan that turned out to be unaffordable. This week, Pirate Parties worldwide started brainstorming about a similarly ambitious plan. Instead of founding their own nation, they want to shoot a torrent site into orbit.

Torrentfreak offers up a few reasons why you should get a seedbox if you’re a bittorrent user who likes to share a lot of files. A seedbox is a dedicated private server used exclusively for torrent transfers. [sharky] discusses a few pros and makes a few claims that we think might be a little overblown. Although the seedbox will speed up your downloads and allow you to bypass ISP limits on your bandwith, we’re a little leery of the claims that the seedbox is completely safe and secure, or that it’ll protect you from getting sued by the RIAA or MPAA. As pointed out in the comments, paying for a dedicated hosting service and paying for cable is no different. Of course, the seedbox also costs money, so you’ll have to weigh whether you’d rather have speed or risk getting throttled by your ISP. Torrentfreak does list a few hosting solutions that may be reasonably priced.

Private trackers are seen widely across the bittorrent scene as a means to a "free" end. At its most basic level, we need to start with: "Why do you join a private tracker?" The answer is to get all kinds of free content shared by the members of the private tracker community which you have joined. Yet, are private trackers really free? What are the economics behind private trackers? What allows private trackers to maintain their speeds and permits them to rapidly upload content at such a blazing rate? All these questions might to the un-trained eye be answered simply by saying that private trackers are able to do what they do simply by their members all having the same goals when it comes to sharing. I disagree, and as you will see, there is an entire micro-economy within the torrent world.

In the legal battle between Usenet community FTD and Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN, some controversial allegations have been made.
